Maureen McNulty earned her Master of Science in Oriental Medicine and Bachelor of Science in Nutrition degrees from Midwest College of Oriental Medicine in Chicago, Illinois. She received her Asian Body Therapy certification through the Pacific College of Oriental Medicine in Chicago, Illinois. She is certified in both acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine and is thereby designated as a Diplomat in Chinese Medicine (Dipl. O.M.) through the National Certification Committee for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM). Maureen is a licensed acupuncturist (L.Ac.) and massage therapist (LMT) in the State of Wisconsin.

Traditional Chinese Medicine is an effective method of health care. It is based on centuries of applied clinical practices derived from comprehensive medical theories originating in different regions of China. It utilizes unique therapeutic techniques such as cupping, gwa sha, moxa, and acupuncture. Unlike Western Medicine which resorts to prescription drugs and invasive surgery, Chinese Medicine advocates a preventative approach to healthcare. It emphasizes correct diet and appropriate herbal formulas to restore health. With a correct diagnosis and considered treatment strategy, Chinese Medicine can alleviate a wide array of health conditions.
At Extraordinary Acupuncture during the initial examination, a detailed assessment will be done. Based on the assessment, a treatment plan will be devised and, perhaps, modified depending on the presentation in subsequent visits. To aid in diagnosis, the pulse will be palpated and the tongue will the
examined. The type of pulse, corresponding to specific positions on the wrist, and the color, shape, cracks and coating on the tongue are noted. Questions about general health are asked also to differentiate a “pattern.”
Acupuncture is extremely safe. Needles are sterile. They are made from stainless steel, individually packaged and disposed of after each insertion. Where the acupuncture needle has been inserted, a vague numbness, heavy and/or dull sensation is experienced around the point or a distending sensation is felt along the meridian. This therapeutic response is called the “gaining of qi.” The depth of insertion of the needles varies depending on many factors, including the location of the acupuncture points. Whatever the depth, though, needle insertion is relatively painless.
Pre-Acupuncture Treatment Instructions:
1. Please eat within six hours of receiving treatment. Otherwise, a light snack is recommended. It is important you do not eat a heavy meal or drink alcohol right before treatment.
2. Please allow adequate time for your appointment. Depending on the nature of the complaint, needles may be retained for various lengths of time and additional modalities may be used, thereby resulting in varying treatment times.
3. Please wear loose, comfortable clothing for easy access to acupuncture points. For example, if wearing pants, be sure they can be loosely rolled above the knee. It is not always necessary to disrobe. Depending on where the needles are placed, specific articles of clothing may need to be removed. It is advisable to wear undergarments, since it is not always possible to cover the body completely.
4. Please do not brush your tongue, if possible, the day of your exam and treatment. (For accurate diagnosis, it is important to examine your tongue.) Additionally, try to avoid beverages or hard candies which discolor the tongue.
5. Please call the office if you think you are contracting a cold or flu prior to your scheduled treatment as the protocol for your treatment will have to be modified.
